Barastoc HOTY 2008 - Werribee Park NEC

This was the welcome event to break the EI competition drought. Although competitors were keen to get back into the arena, signs that some still held concerns for their safety were evident from smaller numbers suffered in some classes.

The Barastoc Committee had kindly taken on running the APSB classes when the APSB were not in a position to do so and due to this situation it would have been unreasonable to think that the day would run without a hiccup.
But the weather was pleasant, the ponies immaculate and the grounds looked a treat.

ANNUAL NEW FOREST BREED SHOW
New Park, Brockenhurst, Hampshire - A ringside seat

Shirley and Simon Young's "Farriers Fingerprint" competing on Stallion Day. Fingerprint was winner of the Ridden Stallion 13.2hh and over class and Champion ridden stallion. He is now qualified to compete at the NPS Baileys Ridden Mountain & Moorland class Championship at Olympia. Photos taken by Sandra.
"Barbara Styles" (Fijal Stud). Barbara judged at Vic Stud Show in 1980's when our Stud Show was still held at the Melbourne Showgrounds.

Stallion Day was held on 25 August , the Breed Show extending over the 26th and 27th of August (bank holiday weekend) at New Park, Brockenhurst, Hampshire. The grounds are vast and green, the atmosphere is more like an agricultural show, and hundreds of people attend. There are four rings and classes are divided between forest run stallions and stud stallions, in excess of 100 colts and stallions attended. In the ring everyone is very relaxed, friendly rivalry with a sense of humour prevails. Many more men show the ponies and the dress code is sensible and traditional, the exhibitors do not look as though they are about to spend a day at the races. In total there were 14 stallion and colt classes with 10 to 20 in each class. Sunday 26th August was Ridden day with 23 classes and Monday 27th, In-hand day with 40 classes. There were hundreds of ponies, trucks and floats galore, in total 284 exhibitors. The scale in comparison to Australia is massive. In the yearling filly class alone there were 37 entries the class had to be split. Forest bred broodmare over 4 years had 19 entries, Gelding 2 years old, 26 entries and so it went on.
Yes there were some magnificent ponies, generally taller than ours with better rear ends, having said that we would have held our own. The line up at the 2007 APSB Stud Show said it all. It was good to catch up with Barbara Styles (Fijal Stud), Betty Haycock (Peveril Stud), Avril Darnton (Rodlease Stud) and Mary Bryant (Wayland Stud) to name a few.
As always Kay and Allan were wonderful hosts, the weather was superb, we ate and drank too much and had a great time.

~ ANNECY PARK ~

Our stud situated in Berrigan has been in the green zone of the EI and the only way we could get over the border with just a float on into vic was by a permit which involved a inspector meeting us at the bridge between barooga and cobram and inspecting the float after we had washed it and disinfected it thoroughly and also ourselves and then we could go through and to bring a horse back, on the return trip we had to do the same on the Victorian side and all this meant that we had to organize times that suited both sides which was near impossible. We have been allowed to float our horses on the nsw side around berrigan with a movement statement. As from the 1st February, the current Green Zone in NSW will be reclassified as a 'White Zone'. Requirements for horse movements within the White Zone will be the same as for the current Green Zone. Movement of horses from the NSW White Zone into another state will only require a NSW Travelling Horse Statement (THS) and a permit from the destination state.  Current requirements for a period of isolation or quarantine for these movements will be removed.
While trying to work around these arrangements we have had to put up with the drought for the last 2 years, we have had zero water allocation for our irrigation so all our stock were sold, and we were carting water. Due to the drought we have been unable to buy hay around our area as all the farmers have run out themselves.
Luckily with the New Forest Ponies, they are so hardy and very good doers they are pulling through okay, they seem to survive as the old saying goes “on the smell of an oily rag”. In the last week we have had our first decent rain for as long as anyone can remember. The paddocks now have a green tinge and the ponies are loving it.
Erinskay Annecy is still going strong at 25 and teaching kids to ride and going to the occasional show with my son Jayden who is 10yo aboard and still winning ribbons.
My two young mares “Erinskay Linlea” and “Aylestone Park Satinwood” are now starting under saddle, they will be very good at whatever discipline they are trained towards, both have fantastic temperaments.
I have a lovely chestnut mare “Pahake Neon” who is in foal to “Erinskay Burberry Brown”. She produced a lovely colt “Annecy Park Ambition” to him 2 years ago so we are eagerly waiting for this foal as well, a filly would be nice.
My two yearlings who are pictured above are growing up into something really special. “Erinskay Just Magic” who is by “Erinskay Burberry Brown” and dam “Erinskay Centenary” is a quiet, laid back boy who has accepted anything put before him and to see him playing in the paddock he has a bold forward movement with a natural ability to jump. He will make a fantastic show/allrounder. He will mature around 14.1hh.
“Annecy Park Ambition” who is by “Erinskay Burberry Brown” and dam “Pahake Neon”, is a very showy type with a very pretty head and a wonderful temperament, he just loves to follow you around the paddock and be your best friend. He has a nice big movement and will excel in the showring or any other discipline. This boy will also mature around the 14.1hh.
Hopefully sometime soon we will be back to normal attending shows and catching up with friends that we have missed this year. “Erinskay Just Magic” and “Annecy Park Ambition” are for sale, more details will be on the nfpob website shortly.

NEW FOREST PONY STALLION AND MARE OWNERS….
The APSB is planning to run a Stallion Tender Auction Fundraiser for the 2008 breeding season and will be asking stallion owners to donate stallion services to be auctioned to the highest tenderer under certain terms and conditions. Studs who offer services will benefit from the advertising program that will promote the breed and their individual stud. We aim to promote and encourage the breeding of registered ponies. LIVE FOAL GUARANTEE AND FREE RETURNS
The Bloodhorse Breeders’ Association of Australia’s defined “Free Return” in 1969 to mean “the right of an owner of the mare which has failed to conceive to send the same mare the immediately following season to the same stallion for service, provided the stallion is still owned by the same stud master and is available for stud duties on payment of agistment charges without payment of a further service fee.” (underlining added for emphasis).
The expression “Live Foal Guarantee” is sometimes employed as if it means the same thing as “Free Return”: it doesn’t. A “Free Return” depends on conception whereas a “Live Foal Guarantee” expressly indicates a live foal (ie one that stands and sucks). What stud would ever promise a right to return a mare for a free service whenever the mare has aborted or delivered a stillborn foal? Not likely! A mare owner might assert an entitlement to a free return when he or she fails to get a live foal, contending that a ‘guarantee’ is just that, a guarantee.
It’s therefore highly recommended that studs adopt “Free Return” in preference to “Live Foal Guarantee”. The desirability of a stud expressly defining the meaning of “Free Return” and stating any limitations governing its exercise is obvious when complexities are contemplated such as: what if the stallion that has served is no longer owned by the stud or fertile, or dies, or the mare changes hands? It should be made clear that the “Free Return” is not repeated if the mare fails to conceive the second time around.
Invariably with sport horse breeding, where frozen and chilled semen is readily accessible, service fees will be payable in advance. Competition amongst suppliers of semen for AI has, however, lead many of them to offer “Free Returns” or “Live Foal Guarantees”. Care must be exercised to discriminate between these expressions and to define the former to avoid unintended consequences. A well written breeding agreement will address these issues.

News from Forestway Stud
The past year has been so busy with the total renovation of a 1974 cream BV to a modern open plan home with 3 bedrooms, office and 3 bathrooms. The yards were an accident waiting to happen and the fences still need heaps of barb wire to be removed. So why did we buy the property? Abundant water (22 meg. water licence) and superb riding and driving makes up for all the short falls. With 4 foals to lead and handle, autumn will be busy, plus three bulls to break to halter. Forestway Black Magic has been sold to a keen PC family and will go to Lilydale PC with her new owner, 12yo Courtney Potter. Forestway Another Edition is away on loan to Geoff and Marge Walter at Ripplebrook, where she is teaching a beginner to drive. She will return home in time to have her foal to Bain Park Shiraz. I have almost been relieved to not have to worry about shows and competitions since the dreaded EI struck, however, Barastoc will be a welcome start to what is left of the show season. Jan McBain

A Letter from Penshurst, Victoria

Dear New Forest Pony Owners & Breeders,
This is Eloise Cameron with Yarborough Taffeta after the Penshurst Pony Club Gymkhana on 3rd March 2007.(Penshurst is in the Hamilton region in Western Victoria) Eloise proudly won Champion Rider of the Pony ring for the day on her beloved “Taffy”. Taffy won a lot of ribbons as you can see. They had a highly successful season, being placed at most One Day Events they attended. The year was then seriously interrupted with Equine Influenza. Eloise has now moved on to “Taffy’s” big sister a full blood New Forest pony, “Yarborough Georgette”. (These two ponies are both by Wootton Shooting Star out of Woodrow Chantilly Lace - both imported ponies.) Eloise’s little sister now rides “Taffy” and we are now waiting for some events to attend.

NEW FOREST IMPRESSIONS AUGUST 2007
- From Sandra Barry

Riders preparing to set out in the New Forest to bring in the Forest run ponies

Forest run ponies caught and yarded for inspection

We left Italy in pouring rain and after what by Australian standards was a short flight, we landed at Gatwick airport in brilliant sunshine. After collecting our hire car we headed for Hampshire where we would be staying at Applewitch Stud with Kay and Alan Bailey, this is the home of Applewitch Pure Magic. This was to be our fourth visit to the New Forest in recent times, it is a favourite destination for Jim and I, not just because we breed New Forest ponies.
To truly understand the Foresters you need to know and feel the New Forest, this is what it is all about why the ponies are what they are, an all round hardy pony with a kind temperament.
The New Forest is the only truly pristine forest and heath land left in the United Kingdom. Not only does it still have ponies living wild, it has deer, cattle, badgers and many other native species. It is steeped in history, once the private hunting ground of kings it is still governed by ancient laws and charters.
The villages and pubs, adorned with flowers, are beautiful. The ponies wander freely through the heath, forest and villages. The summer months and holiday weekends see hoards of tourists descend on the New Forest. The roads become full of traffic and the villages and pubs hubs of activity.
Much of the land is open heath where ponies and cattle graze on the sparse grass and bracken and then there is the forest itself. Ride deep into the forest and you enter a magical kingdom. The crowds cease to exist and massive ancient trees filter an eerie yet beautiful light onto the forest floor, the forest envelops you. Damp ferns brush your legs and the smell of warm moist soil and grass assault your nostrils. There are treacherous bogs and quicksands, which must be avoided at all cost. You might suddenly come across a stallion with his mares and feel like an intruder as you quietly ride away. You truly feel transported back in time.
The forest and heath are the ponies’ haven, but the heath is crossed by roads and every year there are pony fatalities. Most of the offending drivers are locals who have become blasé about the speed limit.
This year the ponies are looking well it has been a good season with excellent rain so feed is plentiful. Come winter and it is bitterly cold, the forest and heath are covered in snow and the ponies work hard to find enough feed to stay warm. They lose and enormous amount of weight, some are lucky and have caring owners who bring them feed, many don’t. This is the natural course of nature and then come Spring the feed becomes plentiful and the thin ponies are able to graze until their hearts content with no fear of founder. All the ponies on the forest belong to someone and generally they bare little resemblance to the Foresters that are stud bred.
We were lucky enough to attend a drift. This is when the mares and foals are herded from the forest and yarded. Many of the foals are removed for weaning and the ponies tails are cut in a particular way to identify their owner. Riders set out in groups to various parts of the forest to bring the herds in, they gallop flat out and drive the ponies into the waiting pens.
The pens become very crowded towards the end and we saw one mare so badly kicked her leg was broken.

Fundraising for NFPO&B

Treasurer Melanie, Secretary Carol and Honorary Photographer Glenn took up an opportunity that presented itself to do some fundraising for NFPO&B at the local level. Mt Eliza TAB wanted a sausage sizzle for their patrons to celebrate the Racing Carnival and add to the festive atmosphere. The patrons were delightful, some donating their lose change to our cause! Our photo display boards told the story of the New Forest pony and why we think they are a great asset to Australia.
I hasten to add the sign we were caught standing under by the cheeky photographer is not one we are pleased about!!!!
Glenn better have his running shoes on!!!

NEW EFA DRESSAGE COMPETITION RULES as of 1/1/08
The Australian Dressage Committee have completed their recent review including rules pertinent to ponies in official dressage. Although the ADC have not adopted the Vic trial of allowing ponies to compete in open official dressage without being subject to height requirements, they have at least lifted the age restriction on pony riders that prevented adult pony riders competing. Ponies will have to have their own sections, awards and applicable grading points. If no pony section exists then ponies will be grouped together at either the beginning or end of the competition. At this point in time in Vic, our requests for acceptance of ponies in official EFA dressage have been much more obvious than our attendance at official EFA dressage comps. If we really want our ponies to have this opportunity we desperately need to back it up by our actions. Yes EFA membership is quite expensive, but what follows is recognition for ponies, pony riders and pony breeders and the opportunities going forward to show that ponies in Australia are equal to those already competing at an international standard overseas. Maybe this year will be the year you begin your campaign, after all New Forest ponies have certainly been shown to have the goods to achieve at top dressage levels. Check the Nationl EFA website www.efanational.com for 2008 dressage rules listed under Dressage News, especially the section headed “Important Notices” re height changes to metric, pony grading, pony competitions and pony measuring. Changes to Tests only relate to freestyle tests, other tests remain as for 2004.
PONIES IN OFFICIAL EFA EVENTING
EFA Rules for ponies in Official Eventing can also be viewed on the national EFA website www.efanational.com Since 2004, ponies 14.2hh and under have been allowed to compete alongside their larger counterparts. Acceptable age of riders varies with competition level. Introductory level riders may compete from the beginning of the year they turn 11. Preliminary level riders may compete from the beginning of the year they turn 12. Junior pre-novice and Pre-novice from the beginning of the year they turn 13. Other ages listed in rules.
