NEW FOREST PONY SECTION 1
Bred by N & J McBain
I started riding Forestway Black Magic (Magic) early in 2006. From day one we have been having people comment on how quiet she is and asking if she’s for sale! Not long after my first rally on her, we took her to Castlemaine PC Gymkhana and took her in a couple of classes and the freshman’s show jumping. She was perfectly well behaved even though it was windy and rainy all day.
I was focusing more on my other pony Forestway New Dawning (Dawn) as she was for sale and I had just started competing on her, so Magic’s first competition wasn’t until July 2006. We took her to Bendigo PC Combined Training Day competing grade 4 and ended up placing 3rd out of 15 riders. It was a really tricky show jumping course and in grade 4 alone there were 3 falls and 4 eliminations.
Her second competition was the APSB Action Day at Werribee. We ended up placing 7th out of 15 riders, and I was very proud of her performance. The day after this was the ASPR Victorian Pony Showjumping and Dressage Championships and we had similar placings.
We live near the State forest and there are many wonderful riding tracks. My best friend from Melbourne and I went on a full day trail ride with Dawn and Magic, including jumping up banks, up stairs and over chairs! We managed to get ourselves lost and didn’t return home until late that evening!
My mum rode Magic in the open section of Maryborough Horse Trials competing Grade four and placed 3rd, unfortunately she missed out on 1st place because of one refusal in cross country.
Magic can jump like you wouldn’t believe and we have done quite well in show jumping especially. I rode her in the Castlemaine Spring Show Jumping Series (an open competition) and we placed 2nd in the 60 cm height class three times in a row. We also placed 2nd in the dressage on one of the days.
We competed at Kyneton Horse Trials in November and unfortunately didn’t place because of a couple of refusals in cross country (well, she hadn’t seen water for a while!).
On the 25th of November, I rode at my first show and Magic’s first show under saddle. We ended up with the following placings:
• 2nd Ridden Pony 13.2hh and under 14hh – OPEN
• 2nd Led Pony 13.2hh and under 14hh – OPEN
• 3rd Novice Ridden Pony – OPEN
• 2nd Led Female Mountain and Moorland
• 2nd Ridden Female Mountain and Moorland
• Reserve Champion Mountain and Moorland
• 1st Pony Club Rider 14 – 16 yrs
Magic’s bravest ODE performance was at the Wangaratta Open EFA Horse trials in April 2007. She placed 7th and was the only pony (with a junior rider) and was competing against 17hh warmbloods. She had no cross country or jumping faults so finished on her dressage score of 60.
I was so proud of her!
Magic has now gone to a new family so I hope that they have as much fun with her as my Mum and I have had.

Magic has had one foal, a colt called Forestway Carnaby Street.
Why I love Magic:
• She is the safest mare I know, the perfect second pony or bigger beginners pony
• She will eat anything if it’s sweet (e.g. cantaloupe peel!!)
• She has an amazingly clean jump with plenty of scope and we’ve jumped her 1.08m
• She’s great to ride bareback and my mum double dinks my four yr old brother to post office and back!
• I will probably be able to take her to grade 2 pony club and preliminary EFA
• She learns quickly
• She isn’t fussed by a crowd at all and she frequently gathers one!
• I love doing cross country with her because she’s so bold
• Her best friend is a sheep called Bella who she whickers to like a mare to her foal!
