When Gumnut was foaled Alison wanted to call him Gumnut but I insister that he was called Jarosite Tuart, - you all know that from then on her was GUMNUT and only his registration papers show Tuart.

He went to his first Stud Show in 1982 at 2 months and when Prophy with Alison on board arrived at the Activity Pony course leading Gumnut the Judge wanted to know if he was going round the course with Mum. Alison replied ‘No he will stay on the sidelines with my Mum!’ Prophy was 3rd incidentally.

In 1983, on Ash Wednesday, he and three other ponies were turned out in an 80 acre paddock which they ended up sharing it with about 50 fire trucks and several bulldozers. I eventually found them several paddocks away 2 days later.

When we moved to Barwon Downs in 1987 he went over to Chris Bailey for two weeks work while we moved from Modewarre. He was my pony and I was going to ride the Otways on him. I did this for a couple of years and then my young mate Robbie Meesen needed to move on from Ferndale Goldtop so I put him on Gumnut. They did Pony Club, Showjumping and Shows including the Stud Show with great success. Unfortunately the Chandler Trophy only took in the Led, Ridden, and Harness then. The first time it was opened some years later to all events Gumnut was the first New Forest to win this Trophy. Robbie grew and in 18 months he moved on to a bigger horse to further his showjumping.

I decided that we would sell him to Lyn Gane for Rachael. They formed a very successful partnership winning many D Grade Showjumping ribbons, ODE’s (to grade 2 state level), Dressage and Activity tests, a Chandler Trophy and was runner up the following year by only one point behind. They were in a number of finals of the Forestway Pony Jump at Melbourne Royal Show and were only beaten by 1/100 of a second one year! The day came Rachael went interstate to work with racehorses and Gumnut was used to teach some adults the joys of riding.

He was then loaned to a young Erin Giddings at Barwon Heads. They did very well and were placed 2nd in Dressage at a State Interschool Competition at Werribee. The Ganes offered him to Alison’s Daughter Edwina but she was too small to have a big 14.1 ¾ hh pony, so off he went to Jonathon Smith to try and get him enjoying riding again. He joined the Showjumping Team on Sue and Chris’ truck for Jonathon to ride. This proved most successful but Jon soon outgrew him. At this time Edwina had suddenly out grown her 12.2hh Aussie Mooraduc Park Blue Sapphire and we welcomed Gumnut back home.

Gumnut and Edwina have formed a terrific partnership over the past 18 months and have hit the road running. They are performing some very good Dressage Tests, clear rounds of Showjumping and ODE’s and Activity Tests and have a good collection of ribbons for their efforts.

This great pony has come home and there is no greater joy than to see my Granddaughter out there with her great mate Gumnut who started life as my Otway trail mount. Gumnut, we salute you.
